I thought I would start the ball rolling by asking how many of our members either run their own business or are involved in a managerial role in a business no matter how big or small? The current economic climate is bound to have an effect on many small businesses and sometimes it helps to discuss a problem with someone else who understands and may be able to offer some advice from their own experiences.

I appreciate that some may wish to restrict problems to private messages rather than an open forum but it does help if they have someone to turn to for some advice or simply just to chew things over.

I suppose having started this thing off I should contribute.

I operate two limited companies based in Thanet although operating throughout Europe and beyond within the marine industry, yachts and small craft up to the superyachts and small commercial vessels such as trawlers etc.

This is a second career having spent 22 years in the Police force in Kent. My wife has had her own business since 1976 and I was always involved in running her various businesses even though on paper being a police office I was not allowed to have any business interest. Times have changed now.

Over the years we have had our successes and we have had our failures, although our core businesses have been and remain very successful.

We have had a shop which we had to close down as it made no money. We also had a nursery school which we ran for 15 years. Unfortunately due to being located in a depressed area with high unemployment and Government intervention over nursery places stopped making money. We therefore closed it down making about 10 staff redundant. Not nice but necessary for our own survival.

So there you have it quite a bit of business experience some good, some bad. I certainly do NOT know it all by a long way but I can certainly say I have tried. Victor Kiam always said "You show me a businessman (woman) who has not failed and I will show you one who hasn't tried."

 Hi Jenny,

What sort of items do your companies deal with?

I am working for a UK company as their European representatives in the sustainable transport sector.  Like you this is a second career as I spent 35 years with London Transport.

I also operated a part-time company looking after peoples homes and pets whilst they are on holiday and could give advice to others on what not to do if thinking of setting up your own company.

Hi Carole

I am in the marine industry working with yachts and small craft up to and including super yachts. I also deal with small commercial vessels up to 200 gross ton and 24m length overall. I believe I said before I am a ex police officer and took early retirement in 1992 going straight into this industry dealing with theft and fraud insurance claims initially until I qualified as a surveyor. Now I deal with claims, general surveys, consultancy. Surprisingly it is very busy at present. Thank goodness.
